Samwise Gamgee is one of the many hobbits of the Shire. His father is Hamfast Gamgee, but Sam more often referred to him as his "Old Gaffer". During his time at the Shire Sam was a gardener and did work at Bag End. Gandalf caught him eavesdropping on a conversation between him and Frodo, and therefore Gandalf selected Sam to accompany Frodo to Rivendell. This started the vital role Sam played and without his heroics the quest would have failed. In Rivendell, Sam was appointed into the Fellowship.

Throughout their journey Samwise made many important decisions and would do anything to protect Frodo and the ring and he was mightily suspicious of Smeagol. Some of Sam's most important moments were fighting off Shelob, which saved the ring from getting into enemy hands. He journeyed into Mordor with ring to save Frodo and then assisted Frodo in getting to Mount Doom to help destroy the ring.
