A brief review of some the ups and downs of the Soundtrack. The score starts off with the classic intro music heard in the beginning of the movies, it then moves into a brighter mood with some lighter flute sounds and basically goes right along with the scene of Smeagol fishing with Deagol and quickly goes into roaring brass and violins heard in the fight and murder scene. Skipping to
"Minas Tirith", it quickly became on of my favorite songs when I went to see ROTK for the second time. The best part of the song is during the scene that features Gandalf with Pippin riding through the White City. The song is absolutely brilliant.
On "Steward of Gondor" Billy Boyd (Pippin) makes his debut on the Soundtracks and sings! The first time I heard it, before I saw the movie, I thought "oh no", but the
song is actually not that bad. "Minas Morgul", very cool dark song, too bad it's just under two minutes long, this is the scene where the Witchking rises above Minas Morgul on his winged beast.
"Twilight and Shadow" features Renée Fleming, who she is I don't know nor do I care the song is not very good...Moving on to "Ash and Smoke", fantastic song features both dark and bright music and is certainly one of my favorites - some very strong horns in this one. "The Fields of Pelennor", finally the choir returns, where have they been? This song features some very strong chorus vocals and then finishes with an
absolutely awesome part from the horn section.
Sadly, the soundtrack starts to head south from here... Frustrating that the last four songs are the four longest and are rather weak songs, makes you wish some the highlight songs on the soundtrack could be longer. If your having trouble sleeping, put on the track "The Return of the King" it should help put you to sleep in no time.
Once again they had to make us suffer with another lame track to close the soundtrack, Into the West. Sorry to Anne Lennox fans but the song is so lame and like the previous two soundtracks it's song that just doesn't belong! I'd
be absolutely embarassed if anyone saw me listening to that song... All in all, it's a decent soundtrack, it's still a landslide victory for Fellowship of the Ring which is the best of the three soundtracks. The music goes well with the movie
but if you try and look at as a CD and not a movie you'll see that many of the songs are just mediocre. If you like the previous two soundtracks then I'd say you'll like this album too because some of the songs are simply amazing.
